🌱 Most folks up North aren't growing bananas to fruit — they're growing them for the tropical foliage. But if you've got a greenhouse or a sunny sunroom, a Dwarf Cavendish will actually give you bananas indoors.
🌱 Banana 'trees' aren't trees at all — they're giant herbs. That means they grow fast and die back after fruiting. But the root sends up new shoots, so you always have the next generation coming.
🌱 In Zone 8, you can grow cold-hardy varieties outdoors if you mulch the base 12 inches deep before the first frost and cut back the leaves.
🌱 Feed banana plants monthly with a potassium-heavy fertilizer — they're potassium hogs, which makes sense given what's inside the fruit.
🌱 Even if your banana plant never fruits, the huge leaves make incredible compost material and garden mulch — nothing goes to waste.

💡 Peel before you freeze — trust me. Trying to peel a frozen banana is a fight you won't win. Lay them flat on a sheet pan first so they don't stick together.

Best for: Banana bread and muffin batter, baby food, smoothie packs
💡 Mash and portion into zip-lock bags by the recipe amount you need — write '3 bananas' on the bag so future you doesn't have to guess.

🌡️ Dehydrating (Chips)

6-12 months
Best for: Trail mix, lunchbox snacks, cereal topping, backpacking food
💡 Slice 1/4-inch thick, dip in lemon juice to stop browning, dehydrate at 135°F for 8-12 hours. Chewy or crunchy — your call.

🍞 Baking (Banana Bread/Muffins)
