Most folks up North aren't growing bananas to fruit — they're growing them for the tropical foliage. But if you've got a greenhouse or a sunny sunroom, a Dwarf Cavendish will actually give you bananas indoors.
Banana 'trees' aren't trees at all — they're giant herbs. That means they grow fast and die back after fruiting. But the root sends up new shoots, so you always have the next generation coming.
In Zone 8, you can grow cold-hardy varieties outdoors if you mulch the base 12 inches deep before the first frost and cut back the leaves.
Feed banana plants monthly with a potassium-heavy fertilizer — they're potassium hogs, which makes sense given what's inside the fruit.
Even if your banana plant never fruits, the huge leaves make incredible compost material and garden mulch — nothing goes to waste.
