💡 Grandmaw's Tips
Don't start beans indoors — they hate being transplanted. Sow seeds directly in the ground after the last frost when soil is at least 60°F.
Inoculate seeds with rhizobium bacteria before planting (just shake them in the packet). It helps the roots fix more nitrogen and makes everything grow better.
Bush beans give you one big harvest over 2-3 weeks. Pole beans keep producing for 6-8 weeks. Grow both and you'll never run out.
Pick beans when they're pencil-thick and the seeds inside are small. If you can see the beans bulging through the pod, you waited too long for snap beans.
Pick every 2-3 days and the plant keeps making more. Stop picking and it stops producing — it thinks the job is done.
Plant a new row of bush beans every 2-3 weeks from spring through midsummer for a continuous harvest all season long.
Don't touch bean plants when they're wet — you'll spread rust and bacterial diseases faster than you can blink.
After the last harvest, cut plants at the base but leave those roots in the ground. The nitrogen nodules are a gift to whatever you plant next.
